Located in the south of Coorg, 5 kms from Ammathi town, the plantation is easily accessible. The name MAKAI originated from ‘McCoy’, who was running the property in the early 1900s. Primarily a Robusta plantation, it is interspersed with Arabica. Some of the Robusta grown on the property are amongst the oldest varieties in Coorg which are over a hundred years old. These are kept in good condition by regular rejuvenation. The Arabica are largely the Brazilian variety and also a variety that has been grown in Coorg for more than fifty years. Most of the healthy shade cover comes from indigenous trees that have been in existence for more than a century. The plantation is run using sustainable and eco friendly measures, initiated by Arun’s family. ather. A chemical free plantation, it is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna which include the endangered river otters, barking deer, other wild animals and a large array of bird species. Multi cropping is the name of the game in this plantation. Areca, pepper, avocado, paddy, vanilla, cardamom, ginger, turmeric, papaya, citrus varieties, are grown here. Rain water is harvested in huge dug out tanks for pisciculture and also diverted into the estate for percolation in trenches.
